Brahmagupta, Inventing the
Idea of Nothing

Thesis

In 628 AD, the Indian scholar Brahmagupta(bruh-ma-gup-ta) published his major book, the Brāhmasphuṭasiddhānta(brah-ma-fut-ah-sidd-anta). His book included the first description of zero as a numeral which had major effects throughout the world.

The numeral broke scientific and intellectual barriers, making it possible to solve even the most complex numerical expressions. The invention of zero is widely seen as one of the most pivotal intellectual inventions from the human mind.  Brahmagupta’s idea of “nothing” led to the breaking of barriers in mathematics and technology as well as defining the fabric of today’s complex, digital world.

"Zero is widely seen as one of the greatest innovations in human history, it is the cornerstone of modern mathematics and physics, plus the spin-off online technology."
